Hoosiers Urged to Plan-Ahead before Toasting the Holidays

INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 19, 2017) – Indiana’s small business package liquor stores are reminding all Hoosiers to plan-ahead as they prepare for the holiday season, especially when it comes to making their carry-out alcohol purchases and for arranging for responsible evenings out enjoying the season with family and friends.

For the first time since 2006, this year both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve occur on a Sunday when Indiana law prohibits the sale of alcohol products for carry-out.  Policymakers are expected to consider legislation next month that would change this law and allow Sunday sales for the first time since prohibition.

“We know that many time-honored holiday traditions; from egg nog at a family Christmas Party to a champagne toast on New Years Eve, involve the responsible use of alcohol,” said Jon Sinder, Chairman of the Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers.  “We remind all Hoosiers to plan ahead and make sure to visit their neighborhood package liquor store to purchase any of their Christmas or New Year’s Eve needs on Monday through Saturday.”

The potential change in the law to allow for Sunday sales has been in the news, most recently when the Indiana Alcohol Code Revision Commission made an official recommendation to allow for Sunday Sales in their report issued earlier this month. Earlier, the Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers and the Indiana Retail Council, long at odds over our state’s alcohol laws announced a landmark joint agreement on Sunday sales, long thought impossible.

“This hopefully will be the last time Hoosiers will be inconvenienced by Indiana’s outdated alcohol laws,” added Sinder.

Planning-ahead is not just related to when Hoosiers purchase alcohol products, it is more important to plan-ahead when consuming them.

“We encourage everyone to plan ahead when it not only comes to purchasing alcohol for the holidays, but to be safe while celebrating,” Sinder said. “With more people on the roads over the next several weeks and in the celebratory mood that comes with this time of year, please plan-ahead, drink responsibly and don’t drive drunk.”

The Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers, IABR, is the voice of the package store industry in Indiana. The association represents the interests of 1,000 package store owners by promoting responsible retailing, developing sound public policy initiatives and building stronger communities with local advocates. A diverse board of package store owners from around the state helps create a sound foundation for the future of these multi-generational businesses.
